Gerrit Thomas Rietveld's 1934 'Zig Zag' chair quickly gained iconic status when it was first released, thanks to it being one of the first examples of a cantilevered solid wood chair. Cut from four flat pieces of cherry wood aligned in a rhythmic arrangement that eschews the traditional legs-seat-back sequence, Rietveld's Z-shape silhouette is masterfully executed by Cassina’s carpenters, who have paid particular attention to the chair's dove-tail joints, as well as the application of an open-pore finish that highlights the veins of the brown wood on the chair's front and sides.
