One of the leading figures of post-war American design, Alexander Girard was frequently commissioned to design interiors in addition to his primary focus of textiles. In his conceptualisation of interiors for restaurant spaces, Girard oversaw the design of a range of aspects that included everything from furniture to napkins. 'Silhouettes' — a series of dancing metal figures — was created in 1965 as a part of Girard's design for the New York restaurant La Reserve and was intended to be placed between the dining tables. Though the restaurant never materialised, the designs were archived by Vitra Design Museum as a part of the Alexander Girard Collection, and have now been brought to life by the Swiss brand.
