The pipe-smoking, beard-sporting Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a multitalented creative who experimented with dozens of different materials and whose work spanned everything from sculpture to banknote design. The artistic director of Helsinki’s University of Arts and Design for many years, Wirkkala is best known for his Finlandia vodka bottle and the glass tableware he designed for Iittala.
