One of Japan's most iconic designers, Shiro Kuramata (1934-1991) is known for having epitomised the spirit of the era in which he lived. First encountering Italian design through the Memphis Group, Kuramata's second experience of the country's strong design legacy was via Cappellini in 1987, for whom the Japanese designer created the 'Progetti Compiuti' chest of drawers collection.
Many of Kuramata's highly significant products and creations can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum, the Vitra Design Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art of Toyama.
