Following the bombing of Germany during World War II, the Nagel brothers were often sent to nearby Cologne to recover empty American cartridge cases, which were then transformed by their father into various items — ashtrays, vases and candle holders.
Twenty years later, having studied at the Cologne Art School, one brother went on to become a painter and sculptor and another a silversmith, while a third brother, Hans Nagel, served as CEO of the small family company, Stoff Nagel.
