Marta Sala Éditions: furniture, lighting and objects
Marta Sala Éditions was established in 2015 by Marta Sala, a Milan-based design editor. The brand specialises in furniture, lighting and objects crafted by architects. Indeed, the first collaboration with Marta Sala Éditions was with Roman based architects Claudio Lazzarini and Carl Pickering of Lazzarini Pickering, who are both experts in design of interiors. As a result the collection fuses functionality and intelligent design with high quality materials and craftsmanship, promising longstanding, useful service.
Marta Sala previously worked as the marketing manager for Azucena, a brand founded by her mother, Maria Teresa Tosi, for which Sala worked in collaboration with a series of personally selected architects to produce collections of the highest quality furniture, lighting and objects. Her discipline is traditionally Italian and influenced by the Bauhaus movement, where aesthetics have to find the right balance between functionality, quality and price. It was in 2015 that Sala decided to move from the historical evocation to contemporary production. Sala was keen to not only preserve and continue her design heritage but to also modernise and innovate it. The designer believes in a felicitous meeting between industrial production and fine craftsmanship, allowing for a blend of different technologies and competences.
Sala’s first collection produced by Lazzarini & Pickering, consists of 40 pieces and is organised into three collections. All the pieces have been designed according to a specific demand and to a particular project, so they have a rich cultural side that is carried through to production, where they are crafted by skilful artisans working in the Brianza area, north of Milan.
Designs by Marta Sala Éditions take an ironic approach to design , where dimensions may be exaggerated or a combination of functions attempted. Equally, the colours are never random but carefully picked and you can never simply identify an item with one solid colour, perhaps the memory of another colour comes close. Ultimately Marta Sala Éditions represents the importance of décor to display the culture of the homeowner and renders this lifestyle through forms that are often geometric and abstract.
