LSA International: Modern design and traditional craft meet in the form of Glassware
LSA International’s story begins over fifty years ago, a Polish brand creating home accessories and tableware which has origins back in the swinging sixties in London. The journey set in motion when Janusz Lubkowski and his wife, Ewa, approached Terence Conran at Habitat to present enamelware from their homeland, Poland. With traditional, bright designs which were popular in their culture, they soon went on to establish their company with co-founder, Tony Saunders. This in turn led them to branch out from their lines of mugs, kettles and coffee pots and explore other areas of Polish production.
Starting out with porcelain clay, LSA International caught the eye of customers who were seeking contemporary and practical designs in plain white or patterns. They also experimented with wooden accessories and leather goods such as satchels and bags that were sourced from small workshops. After some time, they introduced products made of mouthblown glass that became a real game changer for their brand. Allowing experimentation with shapes, colours and decoration, these unique items extended the range for fashion-conscious consumers who were on the hunt for something different.
Five decades have passed and Monika Lubkowska-Jonas, the daughter of Janusz, carries on kindling the family passion which mixes craftsmanship and present-day style, working closely with expert artisans who experiment with the original five materials.
A container for every occasion
Over the decades, there has been a wide range of high-quality LSA International homeware pieces that have stood out from the crowd. Winning over customers from all over the world, they have been featured around various rooms of the house, on kitchen tables and on mantlepieces. Our foundation believes in taking tradition and sprucing it up with exciting energy, to create amazing icons that are both in line with the latest trends but that never waver as time goes on.
Taking history in their stride, LSA International’s core values stand by the fact that every product has its own story to tell – a journey over time, starting from where it originated and continuing to how it ended up in your home. Satisfying both aesthetic tastes and practical needs is not always an easy task, but it can be done.
Production methods
When Monika Lubkowska-Jonas joined LSA International in 1985, she worked closely with her father in order to gain a deeper understanding of craftsmanship and was given the chance to develop her own unique insight regarding design and condition.
With artisan talent in her sight, her creative flair was encouraged which lead her to try out various techniques and further experiment with hand production. Monika paid particular attention to mouthblown glass, which became one of her main focuses and spurred her on to design never-before-seen collections which demonstrated the complexity of glassmaking and forming the various shapes while doing so.
Reflecting the Polish brand’s love of entertaining and gaining in an insight into the way people live, Monika, to this day, continues to fine-tune LSA’s international identity and her father’s passion for craft. At the same time, the brand sticks to what they know best – artisan processes with the original 5 materials they used back in the beginning – glass, leather, wood, porcelain and enamelled steel.
By purchasing one of the many pieces of homeware from our catalogue, you can offer an added touch of original style to any room in your house, or for your front or back garden. Made with care, love and with family in mind, LSA International’s products reflect all these values that are as deep-rooted now as they have always been.
