Design Driven Ceramics
Christopher and Emily Johnson founded 1882 LTD in 2011, the fourth and fifth generation of ceramicists keen to extend the legacy formed by their forefathers, the Johnson Brothers and promote the British ceramic industry. 1882 LTD produce inventively designed ceramic products, from lighting to domestic ware and works of art, celebrating the manufacturing heritage of North Staffordshire through a variety of design collaborations.
Progressive design and industrial craftsmanship allows 1882 LTD to create essential objects and special pieces made from ceramic that are to be used, loved and desired and to bring enjoyment be it in dining or living spaces. Each collection has a different spirit but they always stay true to the brand’s core beliefs.
For 1882 LTD the process is just as important as the end result and so there are no less than 10 processes to make a mug, all of which require great human skill. They are keen to show the process behind how something is made and they value the importance of good design and superlative, prepared to rest the bounds of the material to quality that will last the test of time.
Designer Focus
Bruce Mclean
Mclean is well known for his paintings, ceramics, prints and performance art, as well as his use of humour to confront the pretensions of the art world. The Scottish artist has international recognition for his work in both private and public collections around the world. Early works focused more on abandonment of conventional studio practices, often manifested through satirical performances pieces. Most recently his work includes painting and sculpture and has resulted in a number of exhibitions.
Mclean designed the ‘Garden Ware’ dinner plate for 1882 LTD.
Max Lamb
Lamb is a graduate from the Royal College of Art and is known for his beautifully crafted pieces that have materials and traditional processes at their core. Lamb has a distinct love of nature, formed during his upbringing in Cornwall and it is often manifested in his pieces. Using his unique aesthetic the designer gives both materials and processes their own voice. .
Lamb designed the ‘Crockery’ Collection, consisting of a vase, jug, deep bowl, shallow bowl, mug, posy vase and small bowl.
Philippe Malouin
Malouin’s career spans spanned furniture, lighting and object design, as well as installations. A graduate of Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris and the University of Montreal, Malouin also worked for a period with Tom Dixon. He established his eponymous studio in 2009 and has since collaborated with a number of esteemed brands, including OTHR, Hem, Ace Hotels and Aesop. Malouin is also the director of POST-OFFICE an architectural and interiors design practice and won Wallpaper* Designer of the Year in 2018.

Iconic Products
'Crockery' Collection
Max Lamb’s collection is distinctive for the use of unusual shapes and highly textured surfaces. Each piece from the 'Crockery' collection for 1882 Ltd has been formed from fine bone china set in plaster models.
The 'Crockery' vase is a demonstration of human strength and the physical properties of clay. This vase was crafted entirely by hand and limited to a series of 25. The fine bone china vase is created from a solid block of plaster that is hand carved by hammer and chisel into its final shape. This is then used to create a three part hollow mould from which a number of vases can be slip-cast, each one is fired by hand and glazed on the inside with biscuit on the outside.
‘Indigo’ Collection
Faye Toogood designed the 'Indigo Storm' range for 1882 Ltd. It is a reinterpretation of traditional creamware. As with all pieces from the collection of fine hand glazed earthenware, the pieces are emblazoned with a striking swirled pattern in rich blue.
