Raawii

Founded in 2017 by Bo Raahauge and Nicholai Wiig Hansen, Raawii is a many-sided homeware brand capable of filling any corner, surface or space with a quirky design. Specialising in homeware, they build functional objects to be used around the house such as vases, jugs and bowls and add their own twists to them, rendering them unique and giving them distinctiveness.

Sharing a deep-rooted creative flair, the two founders of the Copenhagen-based brand thrive on seeing their creations grow. Following a mindset that focuses on three main goals which drives their work forward: creating well-proportioned products, producing with respect for people and society and providing optimal conditions for designers.

Through use of solid colours such as Purple Ash, Vibrant Orange, Bristol Green and Freesia, their designs make for impressive features that work perfectly on their own or can be used as containers for flowers, fruit, candles or anything you please.

One of Raawwii’s favourite techniques when it comes to making pieces is through earthenware, opting specifically for the type made in Portugal. In both their renowned ‘Strøm’ collection, they favour this technique which involves using non vitreous pottery below 1200°C, making it low-fire ware and giving it a rustic look. This method has proved a trusty one for the brand and has set the ball rolling for their popular best-sellers such as their kooky vases and jugs.

To make their iconic vases and bowls from the ‘Relæ’ line, the brand opted for the age-old and traditional material of mouth-blown glass. Featuring raw materials that are heated to around 1500°C, a lengthy process is undertaken including shaping, cooling, reheating and blowing air into the glass through a long cylinder in order to ensure the utmost quality. The result of this technique creates Raawii’s striking products, that with their added bright colours, produced an astounding and lasting effect.

The brand sticks to timeless methods of production that have been tried and tested for centuries, yet the founders’ desires to experiment with new, up-and-coming forms gives them the upper hand when it comes to being experts of interior decoration. Little additions scattered around a home or an office make all the difference when it comes to setting the tone, adding character and making your own mark.

Designer Focus

Alev Siesbye

Hailing from Istanbul and trained in sculpture at the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts, Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye is a celebrated ceramic artist whose work is not only characterised by small vessels, but also the innovative techniques used to create them. In addition to producing commercial collections for Rosenthal and Royal Copenhagen, Siesbye’s work is also featured in a number of international museums and galleries, including New York's Cooper Hewitt and the Musée Bellerive in Zürich.

Her highly autobiographical vessels, which are shaped by the artist's personal experience and cultural history, have garnered Siesbye numerous accolades such as the Sanat Kurumu Ceramics Prize and the prestigious Knight of Dannebrogordenen from The Royal Court of Copenhagen.

Iconic Products

'Strøm' vase

Taking inspiration from early 20th century Kubism, Nicholai Wiigh Hansen designed this versatile ‘'Strøm' vase’ as part of the ‘'Strøm' collection. With its straightforward and practical structure, it can be used as a vase for flowers or simply as a sculptural piece placed on a shelf, coffee table or worktop.

'Relæ' vase

This 'Relæ' vase is part of the 'Relæ’ series which was exclusively created by Raawii for New York’s MoMA. The large red vase is made of mouth-blown glass and gives a stunning effect which when seen from different angles, creates light refractions with the water and glass together. It can be used to display both large bouquets or single flowers and is food approved, too. In this large version, it is dishwasher safe.

'Strøm' jug

Inspired by the work of Danish artist Vilhelm Lundstrøm, this large 'Strøm' jug shows off a refined silhouette and can be used in both a practical or decorative manner in any room you wish. In the Green Gables colour, it provides a warm, earthy feel that will look great whether you use it as a water jug – thanks to its food approved status – or simply as a centrepiece.

'Alev' vase

Catching the eye with an unusual squat form and a bulbous silhouette , Raawii's 'Vase 02' stands out for its unique shape as well as its pure, simple elegance. Designed by Alev Siesbye for the Copenhagen-based brand, this large version of 'Vase 02' is handcrafted from stoneware ceramic and features a glazed finish.
